How did rugby get related to soccer?

Answer:
Then game football (soccer) was played in the year 1823 at Rugby School, Warwickshire. England. In those days the game (football) was similar to the soccer of now except that the sides could be uneven with as many as 80 on one side playing against 50 on another. The rules were to get the ball (which was not as round as we see in football today) The player with the ball could actually pick up the ball and carry it. However, that player had to retreat toward their own team to pass the ball. Players could hack the legs from beneath the person running with the ball. However, when William Web Ellis picked up the ball and ran forward toward the opposing goal line he started a new trend. In 1870 many clubs had sprung up across the UK and in Europe. They played following the Rugby rules. A new body surfaced, The Football Association. This was a body that was and is to represent the football teams. However, the first rules they enforced was to stop hacking and make handing the ball outlawed. 18 clubs decided that they did not want that and broke away forming The Rugby Football Union (and it is so today) From there the rules of Rugby Union were written and the rest as they say is history
