The San Rafael, also sometimes spelled St. Raphael ( Americanized) went missing in action in an arctic westbound crossing in the Summer of l927. there was very little live coverage in newspapers of the departure of the craft. there were rumors radio amateurs picked up code signals indicating ( San Rafael SOS! we are being attacked by Polar Bears!)-possible- these distress calls- which would have been in code and impossible to verify- were evidentally dismissed as some morbid pranks by radio hams. (similar stories exist about Phantom, uncorroborated radio calls from the Electra project in July of l937! By the way the two missions were ten years apart, and both involved GIRLS.
