The televised debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon was probably the most decisive event for the election of 1960. The growth of TV as a new medium, and declined use of radio marked a significant change in how campaigns are ran today. Newspapers used to be a really big factor in elections, as Andrew Jackson figured out . Newspapers made Lincoln famous for his debates with Douglas. TV played a big role in 1960 when Nixon debated Kennedy. More recently, TV does not seem to be so much of a factor in swaying the elections, I am not sure why.

From the beginning media has had an impact on the election of the President of the United States, how? They will ask hard hitting questions on policy and agenda of both candidates, but they will ask more follow up questions on the candidate they are against. The media will then publish the answers of the candidates in either an understanding manner or a 'can you believe this' type of way. Examples of this would be in 2008 when then Senator Obama promised 'hope and change', the news media ran with it. The question should have been what change? Hope for what? What ended up happening is a large group of the voter's ended up voting for an agenda that they didn't even know any real information about. Many of these voters have now changed there opinions of the candidate they voted for. This also happened in 1988 when then Vice President George 'H." Bush ran on a platform of "Read my lips, 'no new taxes'" and then after the election voted in 'new taxes'. The news media pounded him during the next election on the "read my lip's" comment. He lost many voter's on that issue and lost the next election.

Sen. Kennedy looked cool (literally) during the debate while V.P. Nixon was sweating under the bright lights. The visual made such a difference that most people who watched the debate on television thought that Kennedy won while most who listened to it on the radio thought that Nixon won.
