The main way that television impacted the American lifestyles would be people read less and get out less. On the plus side, well with all the comercials we have to watch just to see a one hour show, I don't really see much of a plus.

Television was good and bad. Before TV families use to sit down together for dinner and dinner was hardly over with when the kids wanted to go outside and play with their friends. Then came black and white TV! It brought entertainment into our homes and also with this came the media. In the early 50's to the end of the 50's TV was really worth watching. There were all types of up-beat movies on. Gunsmoke, I Love Lucy, The Jackie Gleason Show, The Honeymooners, Lassie, and all types of Westerns. Most of todays kids would find our programs boring now, but we laughed and it was good light entertainment. Technology brought more entertainment through Television and slowly (around the 60s) things began to change a little each year. Movies were more blood and guts and at first it was rather entertaining, but, it also changed our culture as we know it. Also, too much media and therefore we were far more aware of what was not only going on in our own country, but countries around the world. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Control is a good thing and we can mix entertainment on the Television, but limiting our use of it. We've become a fat society in Canada and the U.S. and it's simply the lack of exercise and junk food eating. Also it's fragmented many families. Dad wants to watch his program (usually sports) while mom wants to watch a movie, and then the kids want their DVD games or movie. For many families they have ceased to communicate with each other as it's easier to watch TV.

Once TV came in, there was a drop in the attendence at the movie theaters and there is again a drop in attendence. Why spend that kind of money when you can pop in a DVD or Marley ruined t.v for everyone. watch a movie on your digital channels. Now there is pirating as close as your computer. I miss the little theaters that I use to go too when I was a kid (Saturday Matinees) and also the Drive-in theater. Sometimes older is better!

Television is a faster and easier method of disseminating information, mis-information, entertainment, and advertising, than the previous media such as newspapers and motion pictures. It is believed that in the 1960 US Presidential election, Richard Nixon lost because he made a poor impression on television due to his appearance, which would not have been a problem had the debate taken place in print. The influence of TV is immense, it deeply penetrates our collective consciousness and affects the way we think about everything.

Since TV was invented while I was young, I'll give it a try.

At first it brought people together, to talk about the device and the programing, but soon enough it drove them apart. Programs for one person was not for others, and as sets proliferated, with multiple sets, in a house everybody went there own way.

Now the effect seems to be on young people, they sit and stare at it. No brain required.

(There was a while there, 20 years ago, when I watched as much TV as anyone, but now it just bores me.)

Second answer:

Obesity mostly i would have thought. Also plain laziness. Instead of sitting in front of the telly all day doing nothing but staring at a screen, get up and do something. Some people just sit there all day and only get up to use the loo or get something to eat. Therefore by sitting there and eating your not getting much exercise, so, lazy couch potato, meet obesity. That's it in a nutshell of course :)

The growth of television advertising during the 1950s contributed to family aspirations. Television was then regarded as a more trustworthy source of information that today. Endorsements of products, services and events by the new TV personalities were very powerful. It might be said that the new medium contributed to the development of the consumer society that we know today.

At the time, television was bought by families with reasonable levels of disposable income. The cost of a television was far more then that it is today. Having such a large audience of relatively wealthy people encouraged business to showcase their products nationally. Audiences hungry for the new content delivered to their homes were also ready to spend money on the products they saw in commercials and programs.

Depending on the family unit itself, the TV can have a positive or negative effect on the family. Watching a movie together or just having a meal together regularly watching TV can raise discussion bring a family together, thus, a positive.

On the negative hand TV can be really time consuming and keep a family from doing events together like going to fairs, parks, eating together, etc.

Hope this helps~

How did the invention of the television change your culture?

I don't know. Ask someone who was born before the invention of the television. Good luck looking for someone who was born before 1926 and already was in the age to comprehend and realize the huge changes going in effect. Why don't you answer the question yourself. Compare your life being born with a television to the culture and society before 1926 and look for the aspects of media availability back then. What was used instead? Is violence on tv really a factor in real life? Do we spend less time with society? Radio/No/Yes You can even research deeper and answer every single uprising question on your own.
