First was the sinking of the Lusitania, a civilian ship coming from England to New York, by German U-boats.

German's took out ad space in American papers telling American's not to travel by boat, but the ads were ignored.

President Woodrow Wilson then tried to negotiate diplomatic peace and institute his 14 points which were partially used at the end of the war.

Another civilian ship the Sussex was sank which prompted the Sussex Pledge between Germany and America to stop Germany's unrestricted warfare.

This was broken by the sinking of more American ships after Germany reinstated unrestricted warfare. That was due to England's blockade of supplies. The German's assumed that the American's could be bringing food and arms to the Triple Entente.

Finally a letter from the German ambassador to Mexico Arthur Zimmerman was intercepted.

It stated that Mexico would get California, New Mexico, and other lost provinces if they joined the Germans and attacked America.

This last straw hindered Wilson's polls by the people and led him to declare war on Germany.

The sinking of the Lusitania was a passenger ship which had American passengers on it, the cruise ship was sunk by a German submarine (u-boat) in 1917. America went into the war, and a year later it was over. Also, German generals sent letters to the President of Mexico telling them to invade America and that way the American army would be more focused on fighting Mexico instead of the war in Europe. This made America pretty pissed off. Luckily, Mexico didn't declare war on America. Hope this answers your question :)
