The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution had several profound effects on the lives of African Americans. First off, it overruled a prior ruling that African Americans could not be US citizens. Secondly, it prohibited state and local governments from depriving persons of life, liberty, and property without due process of law. Thirdly and most importantly, it guaranteed all citizens equal protection under the law, a clause that served as an important basis for the decision in Brown v. Board of Education (1954) that overturned segregation.

The 13th emancipated blacks and abolished involuntary servitude except in the case of due process. The 14th gave former slaves citizenship, but was not enforced after the Hayes-Tilden Compromise of 1877. And the 15th provided them with democratic rights.

Know the African Americans could live as free citizens of the US. However, it took a long time i think about over a century to actually get these given rights by the constitution. African Americans faced so much problems like: discrimination, Jim Crow laws, residential segregation, hate crimes, racial segregation, racism, stereotypes and so much more.

The 14th Amendment did many things.

First, it established naturalism, which is the idea that everyone born in the United States (or to American parents) are citizens of the United States. By this time, most African Americans were born in the United States, so they were made citizens.

Second, it forced the local governments to abide by the Bill of Rights. Before the 14th Amendment, the Bill of Rights only limited the federal government, so the state and local governments were capable of violating a citizen's rights. The 14th Amendment made it so the Bill of Rights regulates federal, state, and local governments.

Short

  • It gave African Americans citizenship.
  • It gave African Americans protection from local government (at least on paper).
