The Cheyenne lived in tipi-style lodges called xamaa-vee'e in Cheyenne (the name means "ordinary dwelling"). These consisted of a framework of lodgepoles covered with a semi-circular cover made from many hides of buffalo cows, carefully tanned and smoked to make the cover waterproof and then stitched together.

Most lodge covers were left unpainted, but a few were decorated - the Cheyenne favoured stripes in their designs, sometimes half the cover would consist of parallel stripes, the other half having figures of men and animals in hunting or battle scenes.

The Cheyenne built tepees out of wood and buffalo hide. They set the wood in a shape like a triangular prism and rapped the hide around the wood.
