How did the Democratic-Rebublic Party become just the Democratic party?

Answer:
The name change has to do with an ideological split in the party regarding the successor to President James Monroe and that the only competing party (Federalist) had disbanded some 12 years previously. The Democrats supported Andrew Jackson and those that didn't became the National Republicans better known as the Whigs.
