The advances of the Islamic world, particularly under the Abbasids, while Europe was suffering in the dark ages is absolutely phenomenal. In terms of philosophy and thought, perhaps the greatest contribution that Muslims made was the translation of Ancient Greek texts. Today all of our ideology can be traced back to great thinkers such as Plato and Aristotle, and were it not for the Muslims' translations, the texts could easily have been forgotten. In the Islamic world scholars from all faiths and backgrounds were invited to discuss new ideas and expand the scope of human knowledge and discovery.

Numerous other contributions include Arabic numerals, refined paper, astronomy, trig and algebra, architecture (flying buttresses, which were later adopted in so many Western European buildings, were an Islamic feature), the scientific process, and medicine. A first theory of germs can also be attributed to Islam during the middle ages.

While bathing in Europe was a rarity, Muslims incorporated water and bathing into all aspects of their lives. When this drastic idea was introduced to Europe, it greatly limited the numbers of germ-related diseases.

Another interesting contribution of Islam during the time period is the emergence of rich textiles, becoming the prominent industry of the Abbasid rule. While Europeans were suffering in their itchy woolens, those of the Islamic world were dressed in fine silks and taffeta. Soon Islamic textiles were sought out by the Royalty of Europe. As many European painters depicted biblical characters as dressed in apparel expensive and precious of the time period, there are many paintings where the Virgin Mary is painted wearing Islamic seeming textiles. There are even paintings where Arabic lettering and Islamic phrases frame the Virgin's veil, the artist presumably ignorant of their meaning.
