How did Bruce Banner gain the ability to turn into the Hulk I mean originally what happened to make him big and green when he is pissed?

Bruce Banner is an almost superhumanly brilliant physicist who created a new type of nuclear bomb called the Gamma Bomb. He originally envisioned it as destroying weapons and leaving humans relatively unharmed (flip-flopping the neutron bomb), but was pressured into making it a more conventional nuke by General Ross.

As the countdown for the first test commenced, Banner saw that a teenager (Rick Jones) had somehow managed to sneak onto the test site. Impulsively, he rushed out the door, stopping only to tell his assistant to delay the countdown until he could get the boy to safety. What Banner did not know is that his assistant was a Soviet spy.

Banner reached the teenager and dragged him to a nearby protective trench and threw him to safety. But before Banner himself could get to safety, the G-Bomb was detonated (on schedule) and he was bombarded with radiation. Forunately, or unfortunately, he was several miles from ground zero and survived. After the sun set, Banner transformed into the Hulk (grey skin originally) for the first time.
