The Irish fought on both sides. The Continental Army was composed of somewhere between one third and one quarter Irish - it is said that Gaelic was commonly used in the ranks. Many of the Officers were of Irish descent. Many were Scots -Irish. Some British regiments contained Irish that had formerly fought in the Continental Army.
