Despite the folk tales linking the "lazy Susan" to Thomas Jefferson, the term first appeared in a 1903 edition of the Boston Journal. They are also referred to as "serviettes" or "butler's assistants". Susan was a common name for maids in the 1700s- it is possible that it was a marketing ploy to replace the name of "dumb waiter".

∙ 10y agoMeaning a revolving tray for foods, the origin of the name is not known other than the device becomes popular in America between 1915/1920. However, some time prior to that in Europe, the name Dumb Waiter was applied to rotating trays. An American patent was issued in 1891 for a 'self waiting table'
