Despite the folk tales linking the "lazy Susan" to Thomas Jefferson, the term first appeared in a 1903 edition of the Boston Journal. They are also referred to as "serviettes" or "butler's assistants". Susan was a common name for maids in the 1700s- it is possible that it was a marketing ploy to replace the name of "dumb waiter".

Meaning a revolving tray for foods, the origin of the name is not known other than the device becomes popular in America between 1915/1920. However, some time prior to that in Europe, the name Dumb Waiter was applied to rotating trays. An American patent was issued in 1891 for a 'self waiting table'

A Lazy Susan is the raised, usually glass or wooden platform, on the centre of a dining table, which allows dishes to be rotated around the table within easy reach of all guests.

The "lazy" part is because it allows food to be served to several people without lifting and moving the dishes. No one knows where the "susan" part came from.
