Rastas believe there has been two incarnations of God; Jesus and Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. I'm not sure where the Religion started but it is fairly prominent in the West Indies, where the Rastas there believe they will return to Zion, in Africa.

It began in the 1930s in Jamaica as a religious movement in a Christian community. In 1927, Marcus Garvey, a prophet, declared "Look to Africa, for there a king shall be crowned, and in 1930, Haile Selassie I became emperor of Ethiopia. He was worshiped and respected by the Rasta Jamaicans. Selassie is seen as the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. The name Rastafarian comes from Selassie's previous title, Ras Tafari, composed of Ras, an honorific, and Tafari, his given name.

Whydid the Rastafarian tradition begin?

The Rastafarian tradition or movement began in response to the oppression of black people. It is a Christian, Bible based religion that sees Emperor Haile Selassie as a reborn Christ figure. Haile Selassie made a speech to the United Nations in 1963 which condemned racism and the oppression of people of African descent. At that time, people across the world were seeking justice and equality. Civil rights for all was a primary motivator of the Rastafari. At that time, Jamaica was very segregated and blacks were generally quite poor, as in many other parts of the world. It was felt that by achieving equal rights, world peace and economic stability would result.
