The aircraft damaged the support skeleton of the building. The fire gradually robbed the remaining steel of its strength until the floors began collapsing, leaving nothing but the horribly damaged outer shell to take the weight of the floors above.

The fact that the planes had full tanks of fuel acted similar to an explosive device though. After the planes impacted the buildings the jet fuel combined with the explosions of the planes shot flames down the elevator shafts and through the neighboring floors that were impacted. The fire burned at a temperature of approximately 2000 degrees Fahrenheit which melted the support beams in the building. As the beams gave way the buildings collapsed.

Basically it stems from a number of factors. First of all when the planes collided, this create a huge fireball. But this didn't make the towers go down right away. The reason is because the towers has a redundant design. This means that when one system fails, another will carry the load.

If you look at the way the towers were constructed, you will better understand why they went down. The tower itself was built with 244 columns around a central core. In this central core were the elevators, stairwells, sprinkler systems, etc. Although some columns were damaged when the plane crashed into the building, the other columns still supported the building.

The steel columns did not melt as some people speculated. What happened is the burning jet fuel reached a temperature of about 1500 degrees F. At this temp, the steel simply lost its structural strength and started to buckle.

As the weakened floors began to collapse they pancaked, one floor on top of another floor. This also caused the exterior walls to buckle as well. The steel frame could not support this any longer. Also, since the towers were made of 95% air, there really wasn't much to support or maintain the structure. So it came down.

They fell on the morning of Tuesday September 11, 2001 (local time). This was caused by structural failure in the central support columns of both towers, again due to fire and the weakness this created in the steel structure.

The immediate cause of the falls was the fact that terrorists flew a hijacked airliner into each tower, causing fire and structural weakness.

The twin towers collapsed due to the way they were designed. Instead of an internal skeleton like the Empire State Building, the entire skeleton of The World Trade Center was almost on the outside of the building. When the fire from the burning fuel from the airplane weakened the outside skeleton, one floor fell down on the other. Then the floors fell down like pancakes. No future buildings will ever be built using that technique. When an airplane flew into the Empire State Building, little damage happened. When an airplane flew into the World Trade Center, the building collapsed due to design.

The jet fuel from the jets weakened the horribly damaged metal construction and caused them each to collapse.
