The first white people to come to America came to flee religious persecution, as they did not believe the tenants of the state sponsored religion in England. Thus, when the compacts and covenants were written and codified, they incorporated the religious freedom tenants, as they remembered why they fled England. This tenant was then incorporated into our Constitution, as so stated in the First Amendment.
