The Cree lived in very many bands that were among the most widespread of all tribes, covering all of central Canada. They can be split into two main divisions: the Woods Cree and the Plains Cree, each with access to different food resources.

Woods Cree hunted moose, elk, caribou, bear, beaver, rabbit, elk and other mammals; they fished, caught birds such as geese and gathered berries and wild roots. Theirs was a very varied diet.

Plains Cree naturally hunted buffalo and this made up the main part of the diet. The meat was eaten fresh and dried for use later; pemmican was dried buffalo meat pounded with fat and berries.

More than 90% of food eaten by the Apsaaloke (Crow) people was meat. This came from antelope, elk and deer, but mainly from buffalo hunted on the Plains.

In summer the women would gather wild berries of many kinds growing along the banks of streams, and dig up wild vegetables.

Winter food was still mainly meat, but preserved by drying it in the sun and pounding it together with fat and berries. This was a highly nutritious, protein-rich diet, low in fibre and certain vitamins - only people adapted to it over a long period would be able to survive on such a diet without contracting scurvy.

Wild fruits and root vegetables were a supplement to the largely meat diet.

Wild foods included the wild carrot (leptotaenia multifida), which was also used as ceremonial incense and a medicinal plant. A wide range of berries were eaten in season, or added to fat and dried and pounded meat.

Fish was probably not a regular part of the diet, except in times of famine.

Meat from hunted animals included elk, deer, antelope and buffalo.
