How did the death toll of world war 2 effect America?

Answer:
World War 1

  • The US American public deeply resented having been in the war and losing so many people in useless war that solved none of Europe's problems.
  • The deaths affected their attitude toward Europeans. They became political isolationists. They stopped paying attention to the activities or events in European nations.

World War 2

  • The Americans still did not have much understanding of the European situation when Winston Churchill asked for help from the US to defeat the evil Hitler.
  • It took the bombing of Pear Harbor to wake up the Americans.
  • The numbers of dead, KIA and POWs were staggering once the US did enter the war on two sides of the USA.
  • Some soldiers admitted they really did not truly understand why they were fighting in Europe. They were shocked when they came upon the concentration camps. Many of the soldiers admitted they finally understood why they were fighting the war. The numbers of dead buddies no longer mattered when they learned what Hitler had done to 11 million people in the name of racism and "Aryan Ideals".
  • The men wrote home to their families. The families were shocked and then many came to feel very bad about not helping England sooner.
  • Once the Japanese were defeated the Americans had come to realize war is expensive in lives and funds but freedom from tyranny and cruel dictators was priceless. They began to think of themselves as being leaders of the world to show humanitarian kindness and to never allow another Hitler to rise to power. The United Nations was formed with the backing of the American people.
  • The grief was hard to bear for many, especially the widows with children to raise by themselves. However, the American populace was very grateful to the military service people for saving many nations including their own. Personal note: our family did not even really think about the number dead. They focused more on the joy of the war being over and the men returning home. For some of us we are glad our fathers returned alive because we are here now.
