The eruption of Pinatubo severely hampered the economic development of the surrounding areas. Extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure cost billions of pesos to repair, and further costs were incurred in constructing dikes and dams to control the post-eruption lahars.

In total, 364 communities and 2.1 million people were affected by the eruption, with livelihoods and houses being damaged or destroyed. More than 8,000 houses were completely destroyed, and a further 73,000 were damaged. In addition to the severe damage sustained by these communities, roads and communications were damaged or destroyed by pyroclastic flows and lahar throughout the areas surrounding the volcanoes. Total losses in 1991 and 1992 alone were estimated at 10.6 and 1.2 billion pesos respectively, including damage to pubolic infrastructure estimated at 3.8 billion pesos.[17]

Many reforestation projects were destroyed in the eruption, with a total area of 150 square kilometres (37,000 acres) valued at 125 million pesos destroyed.Agriculture was heavily disrupted, with 800 square kilometres (200,000 acres) of rice-growing farmland destroyed, and almost 800,000 head of livestock andpoultry killed. The cost to agriculture of eruption effects was estimated to be 1.5 billion pesos.

Damage to healthcare facilities, and the spread of illnesses in relocation facilities, led to soaring death rates in the months following the eruption. Educationfor thousands of children was seriously disrupted by the destruction of schools in the eruption. The gross regional domestic product of the Pinatubo area accounted for about 10% of the total Philippine gross domestic product. The GRDP had been growing at 5% annually before the eruption, but fell by more than 3% from 1990 to 1991.

Got this information of a website. Hope it helps :)

The human impacts of the disaster are staggering. In addition to the up to 800 people who lost their lives, there was almost one half of a billion dollars in property and economic damage. The economy of central Luzon was horribly disrupted. In 1991, the volcano destroyed 4,979 homes and damaged another 70,257. The following year 3,281 homes were destroyed and 3,137 were damaged. Damage following the Mount Pinatubo eruption was usually caused by lahars - rain-induced torrents of volcanic debris that killed people and animals and buried homes in the months after the eruption. Additionally, another Mount Pinatubo eruption in August 1992 killed 72 people.

The United States military never returned to Clark Air Base, turning over the damaged base to the Philippine government on November 26, 1991. Today, the region continues to rebuild and recover from the disaster.

It settles ash on the ground, overtime the ash helps things to grow, but when it first settles it stops them growing for a little bit. It's also a bit like Mount Etna which does this also!! :)

Ah, Pinatubo. personally one of my favorite volcanoes.

Mt pinatubo is a dormant volcano located on the northern island of Luzon in the Philippines. many people thought it was extinct, as the last eruption had been 450 years previous. not only that, but the mountain was heavily eroded, giving rise to speculation that activity had ceased at the mountain indefinitely. what a surprise scientists got in April of 1991.

Pinatubo is actually located on top of the remnants of an older volcano. Ancestral pinatubo could have reached a height of up to 7500 ft(compared to the 4875 ft the mountain is today). The mountains around Pinatubo were home to the aeta, a native people that resided in the mountains near Pinatubo. in all, around 500,000 people lived in the general vicinity of the volcano, including 20,000 at Clark Air Base.

After awakening in April of 1991, Pinatubo gradually increased in intensity until major ash columns were produced in early June of that year. tilt meters set up around the mountain showed that it was inflating, to to the massive amounts of magma filling the reservoir beneath the mountain. on June 15, the Mountain entered its most violent phase, sending ash columns 34 km into the air.

an evacuation order had been in place at one time or another since april 7th, but in all, over 60,000 people were evacuated prior to the cataclysmic eruption on June 15th.

it just so happened that a typhoon was making landfall in the Philippine islands on June 15th. Typhoon Yunya's center passed 50 miles to the north of the volcano, and drenched the islands with rain, creating a recipe for disaster. as the rains mixed with the ash fall from the eruption, it was practically raining mud in some locations. plus, the minds in the typhoon redistributed the ash fall over the island of luzon, when it would normally go out to sea.

the weight of the ash was made worse by the rainfall, making it almost twice as heavy. this collapsed many roofs, and led to the deaths of 300 people. the people of the region in fact still have to deal with the aftermath of the eruption, as so much ash fell, every rainy season creates new lahars.

A simple precaution to keep in mind, is always listen to the evacuation calls. they aren't their for your entertainment, they are there for your benefit.

I really hope this helped.

30,000 people lived on the volcanoes flanks and 500,000 lived on the volcanoes slopes in citties and villages. In 1991 300 people died after the erruption, mostly because of collapsing rooves. There was terrential rain causing mud flow; buring many houses, leaving them homeless
