The first King of England was Aethelstan who was the grandson of Alfred the Great. In 924/5 Aethelstan became king of Wessex (or king of the west saxons) after the death of his father Edward, upon the death of AEthelflaed (Aethelstan's aunt) Aethelstan assumed control over the kingdom of Mercia. This united all the kingdoms south of the river Humber under one King.

Aethelstan married his sister to a viking king of Northumbria (north of the river humber) in 927 the viking king died and Aethelstan avanced his army into Northumbria and captured the city of York. In 937 the Battle of Brunanburh took place between Aethelstan with his brother Edmund against the Scots and the Irish vikings in which Aethelstan was victorious, resulting in him becoming king of Northumbria and thus uniting it with the south creating England. Aethelstan's reign over a united England was short as he died in 939.

It will be very difficult to know the right answer. However if you believe in the evolution of Human Beings and certain theories of evolution, one can get an acceptable answer.

When we look at primitive nature of certain animals such as chimps, gorillas and members of the cat family, it becomes very evident that hierarchy, marking of land and fighting for a mate etc is very evident. On this basis, the first humans who inhibited this earth must have similar development of social structures.

A lot of history which dates back to 1000 BC (before Christ) with indication of an emperor can be found. In 500 BC , such emperors looking for new lands to conquer and rule, migrated and have been met with wars. Asia, stands as one of the oldest of the cultures and civilizations. India, China, Europe and Africa have histories which describe political science and society as back as 1500 BC.

Kings and Queens are/were normal people, who rose to power because of their power, strength and ideas.

One can only be amazed at the level of social structure that existed long before modern day definitions and explanations and styles of governance existed.
