Russia after the Russian Revolution lost Large swaths of land. What is now modern Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic states, Poland and Finland all declared independence from the Empire. Most, however, were reabsorbed into the USSR during the period from 1920 to 1940. (With the exception of the other half of Poland which was taken by Nazi Germany and Finland)
