Well, the rats figured out a way because they were incredibly super-smart. They knew how to get out of their cages and how to read, so they could look up all the information about where they were kept, and find a way out. They also planned a way for people to think that they had all been killed, and a place to hide afterward. The researchers were trying to make the rats smart, but they didn't realize how smart they had made them.
