the first seismograph had about 8 dragons on the outside of the egg shaped pot. the dragons had balls in their mouth that were pure metal. if theground shook, the ball would drop from the mouth, and go into a metal frog shaped cup.

It gives them a little more time to prepare for the earthquake.It's important because it told the ancient Chinese which direction the earthquakes were from up to 310 miles away.
