How did the slaves live on the ship?

Answer:
Very poorly.

Slaves were legally classified as property and therefore cargo. They were laid horizontally on wooden shelves and stacked on top of each other, often with only inches between the shelves. Food was scarce and not nutritious when it did come. Disease was rampant and dead or dying slaves were just thrown overboard, sometimes still alive.

Slavery was (and still is) a terrible thing and an event that Western countries and African tribes (who often sold captives to the white man as slaves) should be very ashamed of.
