Many of the best officers in the US Army were from the South, and most of these joined the Confederates.

It also gave the Confederates an advantage in cavalry, as Southern boys were accustomed to the riding and shooting way of life.

At the beginning of the US Civil War, the US South did have a military tradition starting with the military leader of the 13 colonies, George Washington. Thus at the onset of the War, many fine Southern military officers had been West Point graduates. Lincoln's first choice to lead the Union forces was Joseph E. Johnston. He was a Virginian. He opted to fight for the South. Another military man that came to Lincoln's attention was Virginian Robert E. Lee. Lee was offered a senior commission in the Union army but chose as did Johnston, to fight for the South.

How did militarism help bring about world war 1?

Since the Franco-Prussian war, the countries in Europe during that period were filled with militarism. Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, for example, cared about almost nothing else but having total military supremacy. He was always envious of Great Britain's large and powerful navy. Russia had large numbers and France had good artillery. When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, the rulers and citizens in Europe saw it as an opportunity to prove their country's military supremacy, especially Germany.

Get Military Auto Loans For Less?

If you want to buy a reliable car, it is almost always necessary for you to pay for it using an auto loan, rather than paying for it with money in the bank or cash on hand. If you are in the armed forces, you can take advantage of military auto loans that offer several advantages over traditional loans. First of all, auto loans offered to military personnel generally have lower interest rates than the general population. This makes a difference not only in your monthly payments, but in the overall cost of the loan, and how long it will take you to pay it off. Military personnel are considered to be more financially reliable and lower risk to the lender, and this is the reason for the advantage. The repayment plans are often also a great deal more flexible in terms of their payment schedule. For this reason, they can obtain a loan for a larger amount. In order to qualify, it is necessary to prove that you serve in the military, and provide contact information both for your home and your military location.
