How did the south react to the publishing of the book Uncle Tom's Cabin?

I have not read the book, but I understand it was written by a Connecticut women. It is about how slaves were treated badly by their masters in pre-civil war south.

propaganda nonsense. The novel suffers from obvious credibility flaws. However those not living in a slave state were unaware of these flaws and took it as the literal truth.
