After failing miserably to beat the Democrats in 1828, 1832 and 1836 with their standard bearer Henry Clay two of those three times, the Whigs ran tested and successful campaign strategies

1) run a military hero and anti-Native American candidate. They chose William Henry Harrison, hero of Tippecanoe.

2) tried was portraying Harrison as a man of humble beginnings from the Ohio valley, but in reality he grew up in a very well connected and established Virginian planting family

3) tried to represent as many regions as possible so they place John Tyler as Harrison's running mate to the capture southern votes. The Whig slogan was "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too"

Although Van Buren lost support, the democrats chose him to fun for reelection in 1840. The Whigs chose William Henry Harrison. To appeal to voters, the Whigs focused on Harrison's war record.

The Whigs organized political rallies with free whiskey and speeches and general festivities. Their candidate , Harrison, was touted as a suitable replacement for Jackson, living in the West and being a national hero for fighting Indians and the British in the War of 1812.
