How did the white settlers get from place to place?

Answer:
By foot, horse and ox-drawn wagon. After the transcontinental railroad was opened in 1869, they could use the train if they could afford it. Some settlers heading to California also went by sea, but it was a long trip around the tip of South American since the Panama Canal was not started until 1903.
