The wright brothers were among several people that were using hang gliders to fly at teh turn of the century.
What they did better then anyone else is come up with a very light engine that had a weight to horsepower ratio that allowed flight.
They are credited as one of the first to fly heavier then air craft. There is credible doubt as to whether they were actually first, but they are certainly the first with good supporting data!
