in films and books that i have read, i have found out that if they thought that you were a witch, they gave you a broom and said to you "if you are a witch use this broom to save yourself and fly away to safety and if not you will die".So they gave you the broom and pushed you off a very high cliff etc. and either one of the options they said proved if you were a witch.
