Before WW2 and just up to WW2, women thought of just getting married and having babies. Men seemed to have pride in the fact they were the bread-winners and that's just the way it was. It didn't occur to many women that they were capable of more than just looking after their husbands, a home or raising children. When the men went off to war and the women had a chance to work they enjoyed it. They felt they were contributing not only to the war effort, but also to their own families. Many of the women saved their money like mad, and the husbands that did return home from the war had a nice surprise of a few dollars saved by their hard-working wives. Once the men were back home from the war the women were basically tossed aside and they didn't like that too much, so they fought for their rights and slowly women got back into the work force. I think saying that "women thought of just getting married and having babies" is an incorrect statement. There have ALWAYS been women who would have preferred to do other things. However, the laws and society prevented them from pursuing these interests. Even in the Civil War some women would disguise themselves as men and fight. But, I agree it was very unfair what happened to them, and is still happening. Many women were pilots during the wars but were never given any VA benefit after the war. Even now women are, supposedly, not supposed to be in combat.
