Kookaburras have a very robust beak which they use to fend off the occasional attacker. They live in groups and their laughing call is used to warn other birds not to come into their territory.

Cockatoos have two main means of escaping predators:

  • They tend to fly in flocks, which provides them some protection, as there is safety in numbers
  • All members of the parrot family fly erratically. This makes it more difficult for predators such as hawks to catch them. Hawks soar and fly smoothly but they cannot follow the erratic path of a typical cockatoo or other parrot.

If cornered, cockatoos may use their sharp beaks to bite.
