The first step for embroidery on leather is to soften the leather as much as possible. There are many products of the market that you can work into the leather to soften it.
Then you need to make sure you have the proper leather sewing needles, which are sharper and stronger than cloth embroidery needles. You will need to use more plys of thread than you would for cloth; at least 10 plys of DMC embroidery thread, or you can choose a stronger three ply Persian wool.
From there the procedure is the same as cloth embroidery. Choose the pattern you want and lightly draw it on the fabric with a white fabric marker, and begin.
