The question is too vague to give a specific answer, however; a high idle can only be caused by one basic problem: too much air is getting into the intake manifold. Now, this can only be caused by one of (or any combination of) three things.

1. Throttle. If the throttle cable is too tight (likely) then it will always have the throttle open somewhat. Or, if the throttle is get stuck (not very likely at all) it will be open as well.

2. Vacuum leak. If any gaskets related to the intake manifold (IACV gasket, throttle body gasket, etc.) lose seal, or if any hoses or tubes (brake booster line, fuel rail ventilation, etc.) are disconnected or damaged, then too much air will get into the engine. This is easy to find, as there is usually a loud hissing coming from the source of the problem.

3. IACV malfunction (most likely). The idle air control valve is a solenoid operated plunger that regulates air into the engine when the throttle is closed in order to keep the engine running. If you have a check engine light, pull the code to be sure it's for the IACV. If it is then here are the two possible problems. One thing that is extremely common (especially on high milage cars) is that carbon will build up and cause the valve to stick. In this case it is worth while to clean it with a degreaser and then reinstall it and see if the problem improves. If this doesn't work then it's probably a malfunctioning IACV and you'll likely have to replace it (don't forget a new gasket!). I think this part ranges between $100-200.

I replaced the Idle Air Control valve on my 1990 GMC Truck, 4.3 liter engine in Feb 2010. The cost was $24.95 at Autozone. I am sure that the price varies with the Automobile type.

When I start my truck the motor idles very high and even when it is at normal operating temperature it does not change. The AIC did not help. I will have to see if it is vaccum leak.

Why does 1990 geo storm revs high and low?

If the engine is revving high and low while it is idling, then that can be the idle air valve (what was told to me by a professional). I don't know if it can fix itself because I had mine hibernating for about a year and it stopped.

What can be the cause while driving and when the car comes to a stop the engine revs for a few seconds and goes back to normal idling mode its a Opel Corsa classic 1400.?

It is the idling sensor on top of the intake

What are the signs of a faulty turbo?

A faulty turbo is indicated by pure black smoke when engine revs are above idling revs and it can also be shown by poor machine performance.

95 Saturn Sl1 revving at idle Engine revs to 2200rpm while in neutral 1200rpm while in drive with the brake on no other problems no trouble lights?

The idle arm may be off set. The idling is set extremely high according to the RPM's stated and need to be lowered.

What is the matter 96 contour; engine revs when idling and sometimes is very slugish during exceleration?

Does a plane sound louder taking off or landing?

A plane sounds much louder landing than on take-off. A single engine land plane revs up the engine to maximum power for take-off and climb-out. Maximum power equates with maximum noise. While landing, the same aircraft typically has the engine idling. Idling equates with minimum noise.

Why does the murry 4.5 hp lawn mower idle funny?

Not sure what you mean by "idle funny". If you mean the engine revs up and down while it is idling, the problem is most likely a dirty/clogged air filter.

Car starts but cut out when foot taken of accelerator?

Sonds like the idling speed is too low - it can be adjusted (Usually with just a screw driver) if you know the right screw to turn to give the engine higher idling revs.

How does vtec help?

it depends on the engine. generally it boosts the performance at high revs

What are the Merits and demerits of the plates?

Pro: you are able to change gear when your engine revs are different from your transmission revs. Con: when torque is high or the difference in revs (see above) is too big, it will slip.

Whats the Idel up switch on a 1982 FJ60 for?

its quite simple it adds some revs to the engine, to f.e. speed up heating of the engine in cold weather when its idling and so on (charge more quickly)

Why is your revs limited while in neutral?

So you can't max it out and blow up the engine.
