How do you renew your German passport in Canada?

At most Consulates the renewal can be done by post or in person,

All you need is to do is contact the Consulate that is responsible for your location by phone or post, Request a form which will have all the instructions enclosed to complete your passport renewal.

UPDATE:

As of November 2007, you will need to visit the nearest consulate in person since you will need to provide fingerprints at the time of the renewal.

- As of January 2010, the German Consulate in San Francisco, CA indicated that a temporary passport of up to one month in duration can be acquired via post if unable to report in person to the Consulate location. This would enable you to travel to Germany to acquire a regular passport.

- I confirmed my January 2010 entry (above) when, after assisting my German wife to acquire a temporary passport, we travelled to Germany in January, 2011. The personnel at the German Consulate in San Francisco were very helpful.

In a German Consulate...don't know where exactly where your location is, but there is one in Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa etc.

Yes probably you should contact the local passport office or if you are outside the country contact German Embassy in the country where you live.
