An artichoke grows from seed or a division of plants, and it grows best in sandy soil with plenty of drainage. An artichoke is normally ready to harvest and eat 110-150 days after it is planted. It is the bud of the flower for the artichoke plant. If it's not harvested it will blossom and it looks like a very large thistle.

Artichokes are best grown when they are planted in soil and when the exposure to sun is very good. Get all the maaterials and keep it in place before you start to plant Artichokes. You would need things like mulch, garden trowels, plants, shovels, compost makers, garden spades and fertilizers.

You can buy seeds or plants online to grow artichokes. I bought a pack of seeds and planted them this spring. Only three of the 10 or 12 seeds I planted came up, and two of those died, so I have one plant hanging on. I'm told they grow slow the first season, but live two to four seasons and will fruit throughout the late spring to mid fall. I also bought 4 globe artichoke plants already started, that came in mid-summer, and planted those recently. Three of the four are doing pretty well, but I'm worried how they'll fare in the winter. I'll have to cover them well and try to keep them relatively warm so they don't die. As for where the seeds come from, I haven't found that out yet.

First, use a sharp knife to trim the stem off right at the base of the artichoke. Then, using cooking shears, cut off the top 1/4 of each and every "leaf".

Plop the artichoke in salted, boiling water for 15 to 20 minutes. When done, you can easily pull off the large bottom row of leaves and eat the artichoke "meat" by scraping it off with your top two teeth.

Artichokes are best eaten after dipping in a butter/lemon sauce or even better, a home-made hollandaise sauce. Oh, yummy!!

They grow on big busy green plants that have several per bush. Coastal cool areas are the prime growth areas for artichokes.
