Cacti conserve water by storing away as much of it as it can in the main body of the plant. It's leaves have gotten smaller over time and the plant has a waxy coating to lessen the loss of water by aspiration. It has shallow roots that are spread wide to collect any water and the roots have adapted well to collect water quickly before it is gone.
