If your dog is underweight, it is best to put him on a meat-based diet. Here are some suggestions to whet your pet's appetite:
* Sautéed chicken liver in butter * Canned chicken chunks * Boiled or grilled hamburger * Hard-boiled eggs * Eggs lightly scrambled in butter * Meat-based baby food * Macaroni and cheese with minced beef or sausage
As always, consult your vet first before proceeding with a weight-gain diet. Your vet will know whether or not your pet should gain weight; it might not be underweight in the first place.
I would start with the answer to why is this dog underweight?
1. If the dog has intestinal parasites, you will have to treat the dog to get rid of the worms - the weight issue will take care of itself.
2. If the dog has a chronic disease such as cancer, there isn't much you can do to put weight on the dog - you can increase caloric density with some molasses or vegetable oil (not too much of either - 1/4 c or less for a large breed dog - as both can cause diarrhea), but the dog is dying and there isn't much you can do to stop that.
3. If the dog had an acute disease, such as parvovirus, that caused the weight loss, simply getting the dog back onto a normal diet is fine - he'll put back on the lost weight within a few weeks.
4. If the dog is young, you don't want to pack weight onto it - growing bones and muscles need time to develop. Stick with your current feeding plan and by 2-3 years of age the dog will fill in around the bones.
5. If the dog was starved, you need to consult with a veterinarian - chronic malnutrition causes more problems than simple "lack of weight" and just stuffing a starved dog full of food can actually kill the dog.
If you don't know why the dog has been losing weight, you need to find that out - normal healthy dogs don't drop weight without a reason, and the reason is generally they aren't as normal or healthy as you originally thought.
