The energy of the quake is transmitted through the ground. It's that simple. There are a couple of different waves that move through the earth, and you know them as the longitudinal and transverse waves, the so-called seismic P-waves and S-waves, respectively. A parting idea might be that an earthquake is the release of (seismic) mechanical energy, and, as with all mechanical enery, that energy is transferred into and is carried by the wave. The velocity of seismic waves is dependent on the density and stiffness of the the material (more specifically the bulk and shear modulus). P wave velocities are typically in the range of 6-8 km/s and S-wave velocity is typically around 60% of that of the P-wave.
