Basically, there is a bi-metal strip, current flows through the bi-metal connection, this becomes hot while the indicator bulb glows, once its becomes hot the bi-metal strip will move apart as the temperature expands the metal, the indicator bulbs now has no current and does not glow. The bi-metal strip become cold and resets to its starting position, and the process starts again.
This flashers speed depends on the amount of current flowing in the circuit, (through the indicating bulbs) if say one bulb blows the flasher relay may start flashing quicker, this is because there is less current now flowing though the flasher and so does not get so hot, it's still gets hot enough to separate the bi-metal strip, but because it's not as hot it resets much quicker.
Some newer type relays still use this technique but have a third pin, which helps when a bulbs blow to keep a regular time interval. And some new relays have been designed to work with low current drawing bulbs (LED lights), these relays are generally electronic.
The flasher relay is defective, replace it.
If your hazard lights don't work but your turn signals do work it could be that your Hazard Lamp Flasher needs to be replaced. Your car has both a "hazard lamp flasher" and a "turn signal lamp flasher". Your "turn signal lamp flasher" is working but your "Hazard Lamp Flasher" may not be working. Buy a new "hazard lamp flasher" and install it. The hazard lamp flasher is located behind the instrument panel to the left of the steering column.
My Flasher unit is clicking real fast but the turn signal does not work. Is this the flasher or a furse?
Replace the Flasher Relay.
Well, if none of them work, (front or back) I'd suspect a fuse or the flasher. Do the 4 way emergency lights work? If so, they operate on a separate flasher and this would indicatethat the turn signal flasher is bad.
Two separate circuits in most vehicles. You have a fuse and a flasher for the hazards and you have a separate fuse and flasher for the signals.
Replace flasher
They use separate flasher relays. Replace the turn signal flasher relay.

Did you get an answer from another source? My turn signals will neither one work sometimes. But other times they work just fine. I am certain that it is the flasher as the emergency flashers don't work sometimes either. Stiil haven't come up with the location of the flasher though.
The flasher that works the front turn signals also work the rear.
fuse, swich, cut wire or the flasher could be out. iwould put my money on the flasher.
