there are many layers in the earth's soil. you can see them clearly in canyons, for example. the lower the layer, the older. so if the fossil is found near the top, it's fairly recent. if it's way down below, it's really ancient. hope this helps.

How did looking at fossils help Darwin form his theory of natural selection?

Evolution refers to the process of the collection of genes in variety and in frequency changing from one generation to another by reason of selective factors (i.e. natural selection, artificial selection, sexual selection, etc.). Some misinterpret this to mean that one species always becomes a new species which may happen but generally, the changes that happen are slight and go unnoticed. Overtime though, a timeline of fossils reveals very interesting trends like humans possibly developing a straighter posture. In short, fossils can demonstrate new species forming from old ones, adaptations in response to the environment, or what have you.

Discuss how fossils provide evidence of change from the earliest life-forms to those alive today?

Fossils showing animals of the past display some similarity to animals of today as well as some differences. When we start at the bottom of the fossil record (where all the oldest fossils are) and work our way up through all the rock layers of the different ages in geologic time, we start to notice the changes in the fossils and how they lead up to the animals of today

How do fossils help explain the theories of evolution?

Fossils give us a lot of information about species which used to exist on Earth but which are now extinct. With this information we can see in greater detail how species have evolved over time.

Why are fossils so important?

Fossils are important to the humans because they help us learn about animals that are extinct (like dinosours). They can also help us with many clues as to how dinosours became extinct, and what they looked like.

What are three things scientists can tell from a fossil?

1. Fossils can help date rock horizons and can help identify similar environments when the same fossil is found in different locations; 2. Fossils helped identify how the different land masses moved/plate tectonics worked because similar fossils on different continents sometimes showed how the different land masses were once connected (e.g. Africa and South America); 3. Fossils can show how different species evolved over time.
