Geologists study the earth, its composition the forces working on it. They know the earth is an active system by observing earthquakes and the slow creep of the tectonic plates

Astronomers and astrophysicists study the stars and planets and their relative motions. They know the Earth moves by studying the relative positions of the other planets against the Earth and each other and the against the more distant stars.
