Horses have evolved from a small three-toed animal about the size of a large dog to the large and beautiful creature he is today. He is equipted with four tough and deadly hooves that can kill a predator with a single well-placed kick. Strong, large teeth and jaw muscles that can crush bone on even the largest predator, including man. Four long legs for speed and great sight, hearing and sense of smell.

One way that horses have adapted to their environment is with their coats. Horses in warm areas will have a thinner coat than those in cold areas. They adapt to living in a barn when their owners put them in one as well.

Horses have very many adaptations to survive. In fact, they adapt all of the time. Like if you board your horse in a stall. They have to adapt to not being in the fresh air and being able to run or graze all day.

But horses have a few adaptations that are thousands of years old. Because they are prey animals, they run first, think later. They have eyes on the sides of their heads so they can see almost 360 degrees around, and they sleep standing up. They do go in the lateral recumbent position for about 1 hour every day for some real deep sleep, but normally it is standing up with their knees locked. They can stand almost immediately after birth, and can gallop in an hour. These are only a few of the many adaptations of horses.

The horse's primary adaptation to open territory is its ability to sprint and hit top speed rapidly. This ability allows them to outrun many predators.

Do horses live by themselves?

It is not natural for a horse to live alone. In fact, it is very stressful most of the time. On occasions, horses are forced to live alone and they adapt somewhat. In other cases, there are a few horses that are "loners" and prefer to be alone. However, the majority of horses live in a herd, where they are most comfortable because there is safety in numbers.
