Striped hyenas are usually afraid of humans. At night, however, they have been known on a few occasions to hunt humans, especially children. Hence, they probably would defend themselves against a human if provoked.

I'm not entirely sure but I can imagine them to be much like dogs - if you threaten them, they will defend themselves by attacking you. Maybe if you hang around them and they see you as a threat, they would attack you. Dogs are direct descendents of hyenas, so you would expect them to behave in the same way. Hope I have helped.
