Insecticides shouldn't really affect plants. Some insecticides travel through the plant so that when the bug eats the plant the bug gets poisoned. But it doesn't really affects the plant itself. Hence the name "insect"icide. "herb"icides affect plants.
Since pests can be insects, mice and other animals, unwanted plants (weeds), fungi, or microorganisms like bacteria and viruses, they can conceiveably totally destroy an entire crop if left untouched. Most farmers determine what level of infestation is economically acceptable before considering treatment. There are many practices of control, suppression, and elimination from which the farmer can choose.
Pests such as mice will eat the crop the farmer has produced resulting in wasted energy and less profit for the farmer.
All crop pests (weeds, insects, fungi, bacteria, rodents, birds, mycoplasmas, etc.) either compete with the crop or eat it, causing plant stress which the crop must use energy to overcome. This cuts into yield, reducing the size of the harvest and therefore income.
