The kidney, in humans and other vertebrates, is basically a fluid purification system. Kidneys filter urea, a byproduct of protein metabolism, out of the blood and send it out of the body via urine. Kidneys filter other waste products and electrolytes as well.

In humans, kidney filtration is 99% efficient. The average adult puts out about 1.8L of urine each day. If kidney filtration were only 90% efficient, you would put out 180L of urine each day!

The kidneys do not actually digest food. They act as the bodies filtering system. Filtering about 200 quarts of blood a day. And then about 2 quarts of water and waste filtered from the blood is then turned into urine and expelled from the body as pee.
