The killer whale's environment is aquatic (marine). It already has numerous adaptations, so it does not need to still adapt. Adaptations of the killer whale, also known as the orca, include:

  • They are among the fastest marine mammals, able to swim at speeds of up to 45 km per hour.
  • They can conserve energy by cruising at lower speeds for long periods of time.
  • They are quite agile in the water, which helps them to escape from predators, and to hunt down prey.
  • The body shape of a killer whale is streamlined to allow for speed in the water.
  • They are capable of riding waves, which is one way to conserve energy.
  • Young calves swim in the mother's "slip stream", enabling them to keep up.
  • Killer whales are capable of diving more than 100m (the deepest dive ever recorded was 274m).
  • When they dive, killer whales have a slower heart rate, while protein molecules such as haemoglobin and myoglobin store oxygen in body tissue, enabling a more energy and oxygen-efficient dive.
  • They have a layer of blubber to keep warm in cold temperatures.
  • They have strong pectoral fins to help them steer and they stop with the help of flukes (end of the tail).
  • Their dorsal fins help to stabilize them when they are reaching high speeds.

Orcas can grow to 32 feet in length and weigh as much as 18,000 pounds. Killer whales have a lifespan of 25 to 90 years, with females living longer than males. They form family groups called pods. The typical pod often numbers between three and 25 individuals, but can reach a maximum of about fifty. Killer whales are threatened by pollution and other human activities in many parts of their range. Since orcas are at the top of the food chain, much of their food is likely to carry high contamination from water pollution. The Southern Resident killer whales are the significant population in the Northwest Region. These whales are the "resident" type, spending specific periods each year in the San Juan Islands and Puget Sound. The Southern Residents feed mostly on salmon. For an update on the status of these orcas, see the Northwest Fisheries Science Center paper, Summary information on 2008 Southern Resident Killer Whale births and deaths. (PDF 108KB) "Transient" orcas occasionally visit Puget Sound. These whales feed mostly onpinnipeds and don't have known schedules and locations as resident whales do.

Are killer whales in immediate danger if the Greenland ice sheets melt?

It's difficult to know for certain... Killer whales are incredibly smart, thus I think they would adapt, but the killer whales use ice as a way to catch prey, so in a gist there current life style would be ruined.
