Medical ethics is a system of principles which guide moral or acceptable conduct in medical care. The core principles of modern medical ethics are often listed as autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice.

Medical etiquette, by contrast, is simply the implicit code that governs socially acceptable behaviour for medical practitioners.

In short, medical ethics guides behaviour by principles, whereas medical etiquette guides behaviour by convention. In practice, there is a large crossover between the two.
