People around the country wear green and pinch each other if they aren't wearing anything green. In one city, they use enviornmentally safe dye to turn the river green. It celebrates St. Patrick, a British missionary who spread Christianity throughout Ireland.

Generally most people in the United States tend to use St. Patrick's day as a good excuse to drink. However in some areas, particularly with large Irish populations parades will be put on as well.
