∙ 12y agoThe actual television set sitting there doesn't affect global warming, but:
- its production emitted carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas
- its distribution, when it was transported half way around the world, was responsible for CO2 when fossil fuel was burned for transport
- when it's running, the generation of the electricity used by the TV probably emitted CO2 (if fossil fuels were burnt)
- the transmitters, which send out the signals, and the station, and the television industry are also responsible for greenhouse gas from the electricity used.

∙ 12y agoTelevision uses electricity that is mostly generated by burning fossil fuel (coal, oil and natural gas). Burning fossil fuels releases extra carbon dioxide into the greenhouse gases of the atmosphere. If you use fossil fuel electricity, then one person watching television increases the demand for power a tiny bit. Now imagine if a million people watch TV!
