How do read tablature?

It depends on what you term as tabs. If you are referring to the little squares shown above the music with a chord name, you turn the tab 90 degrees counter clockwise, it represents the frets and strings of the Ukulele. The dots represent the placement of the fingers.

If you mean the tablature typically shown below the standard music notation, if you lay the ukulele flat, the strings and number of the fret match what you see.

Tablature is simple to read as long as you realize its upside down. on tablature each line represents a string the top string is the bottom line and the bottom string is the top line. the numbers on tablature represent frets if the number is 5 its the five fret if the number is 0 is open,or no fingers on the fret hope this helps!

Reading music is the universal song sheet, but guitar "tabs" or tablature are generally specific to string instruments and more popularly for the guitar or Bass Guitar.

Below is an E minor chord in tabs.

e[--0--]

B[--0--]

G[--0--]

D[--2--]

A[--2--]

E[--0--]

The "E" is the thickest and lowest note on a guitar, the "e" is the thinnest and highest note.

So basically, if I see the above in a tab I would put fingers down on the A and the D string, both on the second fret. For this chord you generally want to have your middle finger on the A string and your ring finger on the D string. Other ways are acceptable, but that's generally how you would play that chord.

When there are numbers in the lines, that is the fret placement where your finger should be at. And you can tell which comes first by reading them left to right. Just like you would read anything. Here's a little example that should help. 0 means open, 2 means 2nd fret, 3 means 3rd fret, and so on.
